The case for saving money

'The decision to pursue a shared services strategy is ultimately a business - not an IT - decision.' Such end most essays on the background and case for any shared services organization debate.

But is this really the whole story? Aren't there more dimensions to be considered? And, how is the IT group's readiness a factor?

As much as that the final decision lies with the business is true a lot of questions have to be answered before such a vision can become reality:

  • Do we know our goals and objectives?
    • Cost savings?
    • Competitive advantage?
    • Productivity gain?
    • Others?
  • Do we have clear delivery processes today?
  • Do we know our current cost and where and how we can lower this cost?
  • Do we have a clear change management concept?
  • Are we ready for such an initiative? Technically and Culturally?

Even if you do not have answers to all questions today, a compelling case for an IT Shared Services Center (SSC) can be made by the diversity of companies employing one or another type of SSC. But isn't that only for large organizations with thousands of users?

Evolution of Shared Services: (c) Sun Microsystems

Based on our expertise and, more importantly, experience, Reppel & Partners can help organizations in Asia Pacific with only a few hundred users making use of this unique approach. Being a management consulting firm we concentrate on the business benefits of your solution. Having a very solid background in information technology allows us at the same time helping you to ramp such an initiative. This can be your staff temporarily managed by R&P management personnel or even R&P providing key staff for the initial period.

Our unique capabilities allow you to make use of one of the key benefits Information Technology provides to today's business at a very early stage. R&P has helped Andritz AG to set up an SSC for their Asian entities (excl. China) which uniquely benefited them in both directions: The Asian entities have a partner who supports and provides IT Management services within their timezone at highest quality. The headquarters in turn receives constant feedback on further improvement possibilities and streamlines their service delivery making them more transparent and cost effective.

R&P has not only consulted with Andritz on how best to set up such a service delivery unit but also provides key personnel to this entity for crucial roles. That way Andritz works with their ideal partner, allowing them leverage in their discussions but also receiving an individually tailored service offering addressing exactly their requirements! And all agree that it is way more cost effective...
